SEPTEMBER IN CROWN HEIGHTS

The gingko trees on my street are full to burst. Their fan-shaped leaves have just started to drop, turning up on bike seats and car windshields. In the last week, the weather on the East coast has hit a wonderful stride. The sinking heat of August has lifted, and buildings everywhere are opening themselves to the street.

Diners pour out of building fronts on Washington Avenue, as servers bustle to keep pace. As I turn onto my street, my neighbours are grilling on the sidewalk. Older folk eat on fold-out chairs. Kids seem happy to eat on the curb. Everywhere, people are chatting. In the morning, I pass by shop owners greeting each other. In the evening, I hear relatives exchange unhurried goodbyes. Conversations drift out of open doors and windows, they swim along stoops late into the evening. The block is porous with interesting sounds. I love September, because never more than a day like today does the threshold between inside and outside, the divide between here and out there, seem so faint.

Here are a few of my favorite churches I’ve seen in September.
